EFT Corporation founder Willits Sawyer receives Chairman Award at AFP Awards for Philanthropy Banquet
From the AFP website:
"At the AFP Awards for Philanthropy Banquet, sponsored by Bentz Whaley Flessner, Willits Sawyer, long-time fundraiser and founder and chairman emeritus of EFT Corporation of Chesapeake, Va., received the Chair’s Award for Outstanding Service. The Chair’s Award is given to individuals for exceptional service to AFP, the fundraising profession and the philanthropic community. This is the 11th time the award has been presented since its inception in 1982.
Sawyer has not only served countless churches and nonprofit organizations during his nearly 40-year career in the fundraising profession, but also has changed the face of the fundraising landscape by pioneering the use of electronic funds transfer for charitable contributions. In 1979 he founded EFT Corporation, which focused on applying technology to charitable giving. EFT Corporation processed the first electronic funds transfer donation for a nonprofit organization in the United States, giving donors the option of using automated banking systems and transfer payments to contribute to a charity every month instead of writing a check. The company has set up electronic fund transfer programs for numerous charities over the past three decades, many of which now receive more than 100,000 such donations every month.
Sawyer’s fundraising career began in 1968 following his service as a U.S. Navy SEAL, when he was invited to help with a capital campaign at his former prep school, Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, N.H. After a successful campaign there, he went to Yale University, where he helped turn around a floundering campaign, including setting up the university’s first charitable remainder trust in 1971. He also served as vice president of Outward Bound USA and president of ORAM Inc., a Washington, D.C.-based fundraising consulting firm.
Throughout his career, Sawyer was committed to continuing education in the fundraising profession. He was a member of the first class of fundraisers to earn the CFRE credential. He also helped to establish the AFP Connecticut Chapter and has served as a mentor for numerous colleagues in the profession."
